Hey Visitors, Today’s blog is exclusively for trek lovers. I told you in previous blog that I will bring you a blog that will have all the matheran places to visit, so today I have brought some trekking point for you which is in Matheran and these points are best trekking places in Maharastra. These points also near for Mumbai trekkers and Pune trekkers. There is some trekking in Matheran. But before that I will tell something about trekking.

When the rainy season begins, many people start wandering and the green hill mark the nomadic congregations. Then the trekking plan begins but there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to trekking. That is as follows

  • If you are going trekking, do body stretching and other leg exercises every day. Also, set aside at least 30 minutes a day fir walking.
  • Cut your toenails properly before going on the trek. Extended nail and shoe friction can cause a lot of pain in the fingers.
  • The most important thing during the trek is to take care of the feet. So wear trekking or sport shoes for better grip.
  • If you don’t know the whole way to the trek, it is always better a local person along. Don’t dare to look or find path yourself.
  • Avoid difficult paths as a thrill while looking easy in front.
  • Many people have a habit of bending down in the valley when they reach a cliff. However, accidents can occur due to unpredictability of mountain height, fog, slippery ground and strong winds.

This is all about instruction and that’s what you need to follow and now we are starting our trek points.

1)    Vikatgad Fort or Peb Fort:-

Vikatgad Fort or Peb Fort is situated to the north-east of Panvel, on the Mumbai-Pune route, at a distance of 4 kilometers from Neral village. Peb’s fort is also known as Vikatgad. The fort is named Peb because the goddess Pebi at the base of the fort. This fort is near a place of beautiful cool air like Matheran, but away from the crowds of People, the fort of Peb is an ideal place for a day trek. The fort is unique in many ways such as the time taken to climb the fort, the way to climb, the structure of the cave above, the scenic view in front of the cave. There are three places to reach the fort from Neral, Matheran and Panvel.

Best time to Visit: June to January

Difficulty: Medium

Height: 2100 ft.

Food Facility: Meals should be arranged by you.

Drinking Water: 

  1. The water in the water tank near the ladder near the big cave is situated for drinking.
  2. There is a cool water tank next to the Mahadev temple.

Accommodation: There is a cave in the fort where 50 people can stay.

How to reach:

By Flight: to reach here nearest airport is Mumbai which is 60 km.

By Train: Get off at Neral station on the Central Railway to reach Peb. After landing at Neral station, you can see Matheran in front and Peb’s fort next to it. When you come out of the station, do not go towards Matheran and go on the right side (towards Mumbai). On the way to the hill, we reach Katkarwadi in 15 minutes. Leave the main road here and walk towards the electric tower in front. When you come to a tower with a big cement foundation, you go a little further and there is a waterfall. There are 3 path goes from here which are 1) The path adjacent to the waterfall 2) The main path passing through 3) The path adjoining the towers.

By Road:

Mumbai to Neral is 81 km and Pune to Neral is 112 km. you can go by bus or any private vehicle.

2)   Kalavantin Durg:-

Kalavantin Durg is situated in Sahyadri range, Raigad region of Maharastra. There is Prabalgad fort near Kalavantin Durg and this destination is also famous for trekking. How to reach:

By Road and Bus:

  • There are no vehicles ply up to Kalavantin Durg so the best way to arrive at the kalavantin Durg by trekking. The base point for Kalavantin Durg journey is Thakurwadi which is situated around 25 km from Panvel. So the most ideal approach to reach Kalavantin Durg is by street from Panvel. The drive from Mumbai or drive from Pune is quite beautiful and absolutely worth an end of the week escape.
  • There are also state transport buses reach near Shedung Phata and the take rickshaw to reach Thakurwadi.

By Train:

You can go by train from Mumbai or Pune to Panvel and then hire a vehicle like rickshaw or cab. Various trains employ among Mumbai and Panvel or Pune and Panvel.

By Flight:

Mumbai’s Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj air terminal is the nearest air terminal to Kalavantin Durg. You can book cab from Mumbai to reach Thakurwadi and afterward trip to Kalavantin Durg. When you reach Thakurwadi then you will reach by trekking.

3)   Prabalgad Fort:-

in matheran places to visit the one of the main place is Prabalgad fort. Prabalgad Fort is also known as Muranjan Fort and this fort is visible from the Mumbai-Pune highway. The fort is bounded on the east by Ulhas River, on the west by Gadi River, on the south by Patalganga River, Manikgad and on the southwest by Karnala fort, and by the nearby Irshalgad fort. Difficulty level of this fort is hard therefore only experience trekkers should climb this fort. This fort in North Konkan is supposed to keep an eye on the ancient ports of Panvel and Kalyan. The study of caves on the fort can be traced back to Buddhist time.

The head of Prabalgad is a large plateau. All plateaus are covered by forests. There is a Ganesh temple on the fort and there are also three water tanks. There are remains of three or four buildings on the fort. Due to the dense caraway forest, the fort path is not visible. However, the various points of the Matheran look very beautiful from the fort. The fort is now tourist destination and many people from our Country and abroad come to see the historical heritage of Maharastra. There is a dhaba on the first stage of climbing the fort and it has good facilities for food and accommodation, so the number of tourism lovers is increasing.

Best time to visit: July to February

Difficulty: Hard

Height: 2300 ft.

Food Facility: You will have to arrange the meal yourself.

Drinking Water: There are multiple water tanks on Prabalgad even then you should carry water with you.

Accommodation: There are no facilities to stay at fort. In Shendung Village, you can sleep near the school and here 25-30 people can sleep.

4)   Chanderi Fort:-

You can see many forts on the border of Thane and Raigad. Chanderi fort is also one of the best matheran places to visit These all forts are in Sahyandri mountain range. The Chanderi fort near Badlapur in the same mountain range attracts everyone’s attention. Chanderi fort is located in Matheran district in Maharastra state. This fort is very difficult, is lofty and the sky-scraping cone attracts attention. In the front of Chincholi Village, there are two high mountain peaks. One of them is Mhasmal, while the other is Chanderi Fort. Here are some earthen steps to go up. After an hour of climbing, we reach a summit. From here, a path leads to the cave at the head of the valley on both sides.

There is a small Shivling in the cave. There is water tank near the cave. The water in it is drinkable. The remaining ramparts in a dilapidated state can be seen near the cave on the fort. In May 1656, Shivaji Maharaj took the entire route up to Kalyan Bhiwandi-Rayari. At that time, the fort came under the control of the Marathas with little expansion, low water storage, lack of construction, limited accommodation for the people and very difficult path, after seeing these all things it looks like a military outpost, not a fort. Many trekkers come here for trekking.

Difficulty: Hard

Height: 2330 ft.

Food Facility: You will have to arrange the meal yourself.

Drinking Water: There is a water tank on the fort even then you can carry water with you.

Accommodation: There is a cave, where you can stay in that cave and in cave can accommodate 8 to 10 persons.

How to reach:

By Road and Bus:

  • If you have your own vehicle then go from Mumbai-Pune highway to Karjat and then afterward karjat turn left from Kasgaon village and from there you will reach Chanderi Fort.
  • There is State Transport available to Karjat then you can go by any local Transport.

By Train:

You can go by train from Mumbai or Pune to Panvel or Karjat and then hire a vehicle like rickshaw or cab. Various trains employ among Mumbai and Panvel or Pune and Karjat.

By Flight:

Mumbai is nearest Airport to reach Chanderi fort, which is 71 km far and from airport you can get cab or you can reach by railway.

5)   Sondai Fort:-

Karjat on the Mumbai-Pune route is a favorite village of many trekkers. If you are planning traveling to matheran places to visit you should visit to sondai fort. Many people started their wanderings by wandering around the forts of Rajmachi, Peth, Songir, Peb, Bhivgad, Dhak and Bhimashankar around this village. There is small unfamiliar fort called “Sondai” near this Karjat.  If we see this fort then we realize this fort must have been used for surveillance. This fort is situated near the hills of Matheran, this fort does not have much remains but the nature is graceful and thrilling due to the 15 feet steps on the fort. There is an idol of Goddess Sondai and another deity under the tree at the top of fort. Mathheran mountain, Irshalgad, Morbe and Wawarle Dam, Karjat-Chowk Road, Karjat City and the surrounding area can see drom the top.

Best time to Visit: In Monsoon and winter

Difficulty: Easy

Height: 1200 ft.

Food Facility: There is no dinning facility at the fort, but you can get meals in Karjat village.

Drinking Water:  The fort has drinking water facilities even then you should carry water with you.

Accommodation: There is no facility to stay at the fort, but there are facilities to stay at schools in Wawarle Thakarwadi and Sondewadi.

How to Reach:

By Road and Bus:

  • If you are coming from your vehicle then you can come from Karjat and then you will reach Sondewadi from Borgaon fork.
  • Six-seater rickshaw running on Karjat-Chowk route, ST should get off at Borgaon fork at 6 km. from here walk along the road leading to the reservoir of Morbe dam up to 3 km up to Sondewadi.

By Train:

Get off at Karjat railway station and held east towards Kalyan. From here you can reach Sindewadi by rickshaw at a distance of 9 km and Cost is Rs 200 /- to reach Sondewadi by rickshaw.

By Flight:

Mumbai is nearest Airport to reach Sondai fort and from airport you can get cab or you can reach by railway.

6)   Irshalgad:-

Irshalgad fort, which is close to Panvel, can be a great option for visiting in the rainy season. irshal gad is one of the best matheran places to visit This fort is very old. Irshalgad fort is situated near Nanivali Village in Khalpur Taluka of Raigad district. Sitting on the perimeter of the fort, one can see the city of Panvel on the west and the endless Sahyadri range on the east. Irshalgad is about 18 kilometers east of Panvl city. On this this fort, with the exception of four man-made water tanks, there are not many remnants of the forts. In the middle of the fort, there is a wadi called Irshalwadi. With increase in the number of tourists and trekkers in the last few years, meals and tea are now being provided.

Best time to Visit: July to December

Difficulty: Medium

Height: 3700 ft.

Food Facility: Food facility is available in Irshalwadi Village or you can bring tiffin with you.

Drinking Water: There are multiple water tanks on Irshalghad even then you should carry water with you.

Accommodation: Because of small area camping is not possible on top and therefor the best place to stay is at Irshalwadi Village.

How to reach:

By Road:

  • If you have your own vehicle or you are coming from Cab then there is 107 km distance from Pune and 48 km distance from Mumbai to reach Irshalgad. You can reach in 1 hrs from Mumbai and 2 hrs from Pune.
  • There are also state transport buses available to reach near Irshalgad.

By Train:

  • If you are coming from Mumbai then Panvel is nearest railway station then pick any bus which go towards Karjat and get down at Chowk station. You can get any local transport from chowk station to Irshalwadi Village.
  • If you are coming from Pune then Karjat is nearest railway station then pick any bus which go towards Panvel and get down at Chowk station. You can get any local transport from chowk station to Irshalwadi Village.

By Flight:

Mumbai’s Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj air terminal is the nearest air terminal to reach Irshalgad.
